The magnificent new cathedral-like entrance to the College of the Rockies, which indeed does soar to the heights as the College motto ‘Ad culmina’ translates, was officially opened on Friday October 29th. With soaring arches that symbolise the ribs of the Ktunaxa, sturgeon-nosed canoe and ripples of sound controlling panels in the ceiling, this beautiful new addition to the College of the Rockies gives Cranbrook architecture to be proud of. The vast, multi-functional reception hall is full of symbolism and primal elements necessary to life. In addition to the water references, one corner draws visitors to a Ktunaxa firepit, a warm and welcoming gas fire surrounded by what resembles half a set of tipi poles. The high living wall not yet planted, will add plant life to this outside, inside transitional space which is flooded with natural light. Different types and levels of glass have been used to reflect heat in the summer but absorb the low level rays in winter. Louvers will allow venting and air movement when necessary.
This new addition not only gives the College of the Rockies an air of confidence but signifies Cranbrook is growing into a city which can indeed reflect its surroundings.
