Streamkeeper Training Coming to Cranbrook

Joseph Creek Streamkeepers pulling Burdock
on Joseph Creek, Kinsmen Park
from Jim Duncan,  Director Mainstreams Environmental Society

Have you ever thought it would be neat to get some training on how to care for Joseph Creek? I’m talking about beyond garbage and litter pickups… how about monitoring the water quality in Joseph Creek or recording its temperature on a regular basis? Perhaps you are a Scout or Guide leader and would like more information about stream ecology, or you are looking for some fantastic aquatic activities for your troop? Or your property is on Joseph Creek and you want to know how to determine the health or condition of Joseph Creek?

Joseph Creek Streamkeepers is coordinating a two-day Streamkeepers course September 10 – 11, 2011, at Kinsmen Park in Cranbrook. We are looking for Cranbrook citizens who want to learn about stream ecology and who want to apply that knowledge as stewards of Joseph Creek. Columbia Basin Trust’s Environmental Initiatives Program is supporting this Streamkeeper Training, allowing Joseph Creek Streamkeepers to offer the two-day course at no cost to participants. In fact, all participants will get the Streamkeepers manual, which is full of aquatic resource information and lots of tried and true water activities for kids and community groups. We also thank Columbia Basin Trust for helping Joseph Creek Streamkeepers purchase Streamkeeping equipment, which will be available for Joseph Creek Streamkeeper projects after the Streamkeepers Course.

Course participants will learn how to design projects and to measure physical and chemical parameters in Joseph Creek. With this knowledge and equipment, you and your family, friends or club may be interested in creating stewardship activities on Joseph Creek.

If this sounds interesting to you, please contact Jim Duncan at waterjim@shaw.ca to register or phone Stewart Wilson (President of Joseph Creek Streamkeepers) at 250-489-1422. Course participants will become members of the Joseph Creek Streamkeepers, a group of citizens dedicated to ensuring Joseph Creek remains healthy. If you are leading a group, Joseph Creek Streamkeepers will provide you with contacts of other people willing to assist you with projects. Working together, we will be much more effective in helping to keep Joseph Creek healthy.

SIGN UP NOW FOR FREE STREAMKEEPER TRAINING: SEPT. 10–11, 2011.

Register by e-mailing Jim Duncan at waterjim@shaw.ca or by phoning Stewart Wilson at (250-489-1422)
