Growth and Investment

We hear the words ‘investment and growth’ constantly from those currently governing our city and those who wish to govern the city.  We have also often heard that there exists a group of people who believes land should be sanitized for no growth or investment. These words float around in the community like ominous black clouds casting a pall over our daily moods and causing division of minds. Unfortunately words like this are likely hatched out of ignorance and fear and truthfully have no substance.

We do need however to ask ourselves what we mean by growth. Is it well-paid long term jobs? Is it a better-looking city, with a variety of appropriate housing? Is it an increase in arts and culture to satisfy our souls? Is it the presence of a university to stimulate our minds? Is it the security of a healthy city? If it is these things then they will all need investment of both time and money. All these things could be attained within our current city under the umbrella of sustainable smart growth and it is doubtful there is anyone out there who would not want these things for our Cranbrook.

If it is population growth we wish to see then secure employment must come first. The City’s Economic Development Strategy begins the exploration. This worthwhile document is an easy read but most small towns in BC are pursuing similar goals.

It will take creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, new ideas, commitment, time and energy to significantly push Cranbrook to new frontiers.
