Campbell River Composters

From the City of Campbell River's website:

Six families have been chosen to participate in Campbell River’s first ever Video Compost Challenge. After 20 interviews were conducted at the Compost Education Centre, judges scored each family on past composting barriers, the desire to have healthy compost, and diversity of all families.
Every day for a period of 30 days between July 1 and Aug. 15, the six families will document their composting journey on video. Some families have never composted before while others have had pumpkins growing out of their composter!
Families will be scored on who produces the healthiest compost, generates the least amount of garbage, and who captures the funniest and most creative moments of their compost journey on video. The Video Compost Challenge will wrap up with a professionally-produced film featured on Shaw TV, YouTube, in Campbell River schools, and at 2013 community film festivals, including the Earth Week Film Festival.
“The video challenge is a fun and innovative way to involve families in the community with an initiative that benefits not only them, but others as well,”said Ron Neufeld, general manager of operations for the City of Campbell River. “The videos produced through the challenge will be a useful communication tool within our community and can also be used to show other communities how we are succeeding at reducing the amount of waste we produce.”
“The goal of this challenge is for people to see that composting is fun, easy and good for the environment. If these families who have had barriers and challenges with composting can be successful, we hope other Campbell River residents will be inspired to start composting,” says Amanda Taylor, compost challenge coordinator for the City of Campbell River.
Watch the six families tell Campbell River their composting stories and see how they bust can’t-do-compost myths and share their tips.

  1. Sounds like an awesome idea!! Is this something we could do in Cranbrook? It could raise awareness about not only the value of composting but also the importance of reducing waste into our landfill.
