Post Notes for the Council Meeting of January 6th 2014

Delegations
Patti King, Canadian Cancer Society and Dana Schmidt, Donna Schmidt Lung Cancer Prevention Society re:  Radon gas and lung cancer
An informative presentation was made to Council concerning the dangers of radon gas exposure.  It was reported there are hot spots for the gas in BC including the town of Castlegar.  However, this gas which forms as naturally occurring uranium breaks down, is found in many places within the soil.  As it leaks into the atmosphere it can penetrate into home basements contaminating the air within a home. The only way to know if it is present in amounts considered to be hazardous to long-term health are to test for it.  Dana Schmidt asked Council for help in the distribution of both information and meters for residents to use for this purpose.  He explained how amounts considered to be dangerous can easily be removed from a home.    With long term exposure to dangerous levels radon gas can be a cause of lung cancer.
Council asked for a formal letter to be sent with these requests.

Council Inquiries
After a meeting concerning Cranbrooks' Transport system Mayor Stetski asked for an explanation as to why obtaining smaller buses was not a viable option.  The response from finance indicates that the cost of refinancing would exceed the cost of the buses.  Cranbrook's bus ridership is very low.
Mayor Stetski also asked administration to look into the cost of a different method of snow plowing where snow would be plowed to the centre of the road as opposed to and over sidewalks.  This was a suggestion from a resident.
Councillor Pallesen asked that consideration be given to lowering the tree canopy and removing plants from the garden outside the Hub.  This follows the removal of grasses from the Centennial Garden in front of Gerricks after many complaints from the business that would rather see their building exposed.
Councillor Warner asked about the problem of ice on the sidewalk adjacent to Willowbrook.  It was pointed out that this is the responsibility of the strata development itself as with any homeowner whose responsibility it is to clear the sidewalk in front of their property.  The City clears the sidewalk opposite which is adjacent to City property.

Administration Report
This can be read at:
It was suggested that dog owners be consulted about the proposed dog park within the Moir Park reclamation plans.  CAO Staudt pointed out the need to conserve funds for the final reclamation.  Councillor Davis reiterated the point that any funds spent on the Moir Park plan will come, not from taxpayers but from within the limitations of the legacy of Mr. Moir and from the proceeds of gravel extracted from the pit.
